The Finger lakes trail
is a 584-mile long hiking trail through Haudenosaunee territory, the Confederacy of nations indigenous to this region of what is now known as North America. It begins at the Pennsylvania-New York border in Allegany State Park, passes through the Southern Tier, Finger Lakes, and Leatherstocking regions of New York, and ends at the summit of Slide Mountain in the Catskill Forest Preserve.
To commemorate graduating from college and celebrate my last summer in New York before moving to Wisconsin for graduate school, I hiked this trail with my friend Luke (and Marty, Oliver, and Sarah who joined along the way). On May 17th, 2019, we began hiking east towards the Catskills. Over the next 41 days, I wrote prose and poetry to try to capture the moments on trail, and it are these moments that are now published. In gratitude towards those who continue to maintain and promote the Finger Lakes Trail, all profits from the sale of my chapbook, “The Finger Lakes Trail: In Poetry”, will be donated to the Finger Lakes Trail Conference.
